Kush Strain

Etymologically speaking its origin is not very clear, since there are several theories. On one hand we have the friendliest, this is offered by Hinduism and says that the term comes from the Hindu religion and refers to the way a mother holds and cradles her newborn child. On the other hand we have the crudest, which is related to the term murder, since this genetics originates in the regions of the Kush from where it takes its name, and because this area was the passage of Hindu slaves, who died in these Afghan mountains on their way to the Muslim courts for their harsh conditions, it is attributed that Hindu Kush means literally kill the Hindu.

Although it is good to comment these previous theories as curiosity, the one that can be better sustained in an anthropological way is the one that alludes to "attachment" since this plant is a concept in itself that has survived for millennia, relating at the same time language, history and symbology, representing the form of the mountain and the people and life in general that live in it, like the embrace of a mother to her son of which we spoke before.

We have already mentioned that this strain has its origins in the Hindu Kush mountains, covering Afghanistan, north-west Pakistan and the north-western regions of India, Jammu and Kashmir to be more exactly. It is a very abrupt area, with large gorges, which strongly marked the genetics of this plant, favouring it with robustness and early ripening due to centuries of natural selection. The plants in the original kush are characterized for being perfect for resin extraction and hashish manufacture. This was well known to the native growers of that time and they took advantage of the medicinal and narcotic properties of the plant to the maximum.

Regarding the way Kush got to the United States, and later settled in California, the story goes through the first hippies and the movement known as "The Overland". This was born in the 60's in Holland as a representation for the interest in culture and arts of countries called exotic at that time, such as India. In Amsterdam arose the "Magic Bus", which had great impact among the young people of the time, being the cover in a record of the famous band "The Who", which dedicated a theme to the bus. In it the young people crossed Europe and Asia with in their way to India, crossing the Hindu Kush and when they returned, appart of the histories and souvenirs, they took seeds of the original plant of the zone.

From this long history, the Americans began to import seeds and make crosses with them to obtain a faster flowering and more compact buds than the original plant, giving rise to the genetics that today we know. With the kush strain there was a before and an after in the indoor crops.

The most common characteristics of the kush are the Índica, or predominantly Índica genetics, with touches of earthy and citrus flavor, short or medium flowering periods, leafy and robust, with large layers of resin in their buds.

Finally, we can not avoid talking about the most well know Kush, the famous OG Kush, from sunny California. The most credible stories mix a Pakistani kush with a Chemdawg (from the ChemDog breeder), but the most accepted version tells that a grower of Grass Valley in California called Jhon, got a Chemdawg that shared with two other growers, Dibble Creek and Putz, from Sunset Beach. The latter put the icing on the cake by mixing a hybrid male of Lemon Thai and an Old World Paki Kush. When the buds began to circulate, Putz was told that this strain could only have been grown in the kush mountains, to which he replied "this Kush has grown in the ocean, brother. And so the name of "Ocean Grown" was established, which is kept in the acronym OG.
