Enzymes for crops

Enzymes occur naturally in both plants and animals. They play a fundamental role in the functioning of these organisms, although they work in the background. In the following, the general characteristics of enzymes as well as the most important advantages they can bring to a plant cultivation will be presented. 

What are enzymes?

Before learning about the benefits that the use of enzymes can bring to a crop, it is necessary to explain what enzymes are: protein molecules that carry out chemical reactions in a natural way. To do this, enzymes bind to the substrate and create or break down molecular bonds, which can eventually stimulate plant development. 

Enzymes help to break down macronutrients and trace elements into tiny parts that are easily absorbed by the plant, while they also help to carry out the digestion of dead cells present near the root, which facilitates the absorption of nutrients into the substrate.

In the case of crops, the substrate is the subject on which the enzyme works. Depending on the type of substrate the grower is working with, there will be an enzyme susceptible to bind to it. Thus, the way in which enzymes and substrates are related is similar to that of a key that opens a certain lock. Therefore, knowledge of the type of enzyme used is necessary for it to work optimally with the selected substrate. 

As a general rule, enzymes are naturally found in soil substrates. However, if you are working with other types of harmless substrates or growing in mediums such as hydroponics, which do not use a solid substrate, you need to add enzymes to improve the quality of the substrate.
